Tile Over Countertops. A retro-flavored cooking space by Seattle Custom Cabinets situated in the Pacific Northwest pairs a hexagon tile countertop with a subway tile backsplash. A laminate countertop is an acceptable base for ceramic tile, but think carefully before you attempt it.
Then, lay the tile in place, push it firmly into the mortar, and use vinyl spacers to account for the grout lines. Over the sink area are two vintage-inspired milk glass pendants lights. Think mosaics, mismatched, recycled or hand-painted tiles that are versatile enough to go from the counter to the backsplash—or even an entire wall.
This project is time consuming, messy and, depending on the materials you select, can be costly.
I loved the look of the feather finish countertops that John and Sherry did in their temporary kitchen over on YHL , and after reading that I fell into a research spiral soaking up every bit of feather finish concrete knowledge I could find.
Now, we have done several concrete countertops before, and have removed the old countertop and poured a whole new one. For the countertop shown, I brushed tile sealer over the entire countertop and backsplash—to protect the tile, not the grout. There are a couple cracks, but ALL concrete cracks.
