Laminate Existing Countertop. If your countertops have a raised and rounded edge, often called a waterfall edge, you can't cover them with new laminate because it's impossible to get the new material to conform to the edge contours. Q: Can I install plastic laminate over a countertop that's already covered with existing laminate material?
Lay marble tiles on top of your laminate countertop for a glossy high-end finish. The paint is designed to cover laminate, solid-surface. Cut strips of laminate to cover the edges of the countertop, then cut a big piece to go on top.
Remove the glossy finish from the old laminate countertop by sanding it off with a random orbital sander.
If your counter has curved edges, as most do, you'll have to grind off the raised bead at the lip with a belt sander and you won't be able to tile the backsplash without cutting off the curved top edge.
However, their texture and finish can feel a little cold and uninviting for an eating area. Rather than purchase expensive new countertops, refurbish your existing ones. Repair any gouges or loose edges and make sure the existing laminate is glued firmly.
